Light Oak School 119

Music Plan

At our school, music is a valued and integral part of a broad and balanced curriculum. Our music plan is designed to inspire creativity, build confidence and develop a lifelong love of music for all children. Through high‑quality music teaching, pupils explore how music is created, performed and appreciated across a wide range of styles, periods and traditions.

Music is taught weekly in all year groups and follows a carefully sequenced progression that develops skills in singing, listening, composing and performing. Singing is central to our music provision and is led weekly by our Music Lead, who teaches singing across the whole school. This ensures consistency, progression and a strong shared musical culture for all pupils.

We are proud of our school choir, which provides pupils with the opportunity to develop their vocal skills further and perform with confidence. The choir has represented the school at numerous events and competitions, showcasing pupils’ talents and promoting a strong sense of pride and community. These experiences help children to develop teamwork, resilience and performance skills.

To enrich our music curriculum, we regularly invite visitors into school to teach and showcase different types of music. Pupils are exposed to music from a diverse range of cultures, helping them to develop an understanding and appreciation of global musical traditions as well as respect for diversity. These experiences enhance classroom learning and broaden pupils’ musical horizons.

Our music plan is inclusive and accessible to all pupils, regardless of prior experience. By the time children leave our school, they will have developed a secure musical foundation, confidence in performing and creating music, and an appreciation of music as an important part of life and culture.
